British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
